Walt Whitman writes in “Song of Myself”,
Long have you timidly waded holding a plank by the shore,
Now I will you to be a bold swimmer,
To jump off in the midst of the sea, rise again, nod to me, shout,
and laughingly dash with your hair.
I have always loved this quote. It reminds me that life is before us, waiting to be lived…an abundant life. Too easily we fall into the trap of: our daily routine. Bryce helped me break this cycle last Friday when I received an email from him:
It is too beautiful a day to be working…come play!
I could not have agreed more. After much rain this season in California, we have been awaiting the sunshine with much anticipation. A phone call and an hour later, he picked me up from school and we headed to the beach. It was the first day in awhile that Southern California felt like California again. The sky was golden, and the sun seemed to make the green richer and the colors more crisp. Everyone was basking in the sun. Surfers were crawling the streets as we pulled into Encinitas. After stopping to purchase some new running shoes, we headed down the the beach to scope out the scene.
Beauty! Waves crashing with surfers attached to their hips, couples walking hand-and-hand down the wide stretch of Pacific sand, and hippies hoola-hooping…
Yes, this is why people live in Southern California…
Bryce was particularly excited about the long-awaited sunshine…
So was Lisa…
Until Bryce told her at the end of the day they had to go home…
Needless to say, we are trying to live life a bit outside of our daily routine and soak up Southern California before we head north.
